Losing weight is never an easy undertaking. In order to shed unwanted pounds (and keep them off), you have to alter the way you approach eating and drastically change your lifestyle. You likely have to give up some of the foods you love (and that you’ve been indulging in your entire life), cut back on portion size, and work some exercise into your daily routine. In the beginning, this can leave you feeling pretty awful. And if a rumbling tummy and sore muscles are keeping you up at night, then you might not be looking your best either (despite the fact that you are on your way to weight loss). All in all, it can be a pretty discouraging process. But you can help your cause a lot by ensuring that you always have water close at hand.
You might not think water could cure all that ails you, but in fact, it can do a lot more than you think. There’s a reason you’re supposed to drink eight glasses a day. For one thing, as your fat cells shrink, anything stored within could be released into your system. By drinking plenty of water you can quickly flush these toxins out of your system so that they don’t build up and make you feel worse. Water also helps your body to metabolize these stored fats (breaking them down for energy). In addition, changing your diet and incorporating exercise can easily lead to dehydration if you’re not careful. By keeping water on hand, you can avoid the many unfortunate symptoms of dehydration, such as nausea, headache, dizziness, and fatigue.
Water can also aid in quieting your appetite. By filling your stomach with water (most of which will eventually be shed as waste) you can control hunger and stop many of the cravings that would normally have you running to the pantry for snacks. Of course, you may be worried about water retention, but in fact, just the opposite will occur. When your body is parched, it begins to store water as a preventive measure, causing your body to bloat (which you definitely don’t want). When you have plenty of H2O in your system, your body will slough off the excess fluid since it perceives that it is well hydrated.
But water isn’t only great for the functionality of your body, making you feel better as you diet and exercise; it can also help you to look better as you try to slim down. You’ve probably noticed that weight loss can lead to sagging skin. Even if you’re working to tone and tighten muscles, shrinking fat cells can leave an excess of stretched skin to contend with (although this is generally more problematic with rapid weight loss than the slow-and-steady variety). However, water helps to hydrate your skin, plumping up cells that would otherwise be sagging from shrinkage. It also helps to keep your skin free of blemishes by restoring pH balance and constantly flushing impurities. In short, keeping a bottle of water on hand at all times will ensure that you remain healthy and continue to look and feel great as you take the steps necessary to lose weight.
