5 Useful Tips for Your Diabetes Diet

0

Diabetes is a disease which requires you to make some lifestyle changes in order to manage it successfully. People with diabetes should always know what and how much they should eat or drink because they have to keep the blood sugar (blood glucose) levels normal. Also most of type 2 diabetes patients are overweight and have developed diabetes at least partially because of their weight problems which they should solve, so this is another reason why healthy diet is essential for them.

1) Create and maintain regular eating patterns.

You should try to have your meals at the same time every day and you can’t skip them if you want to keep yourself in check. Don’t eat too often – have at least a 4 hour interval between your meals. Regular eating patterns also include sticking to a certain daily calorie intake which depends on your body type and condition.

2) Control the amount of carbohydrates that you consume.

Carbohydrates can affect your blood sugar levels, so it is usually suggested that they compile less than 50% of all the calories that you consume. This percentage is not the same for all diabetes patients but everyone who has this disease should monitor his daily intake of carbohydrates. Vegetables, dairy products and starch contain a notable amount of these nutrients.

3) Take advantage of fiber

Fiber is a very valuable nutrient for diabetics as it doesn’t raise your calorie intake or glucose levels. That is obviously the reason why most of the foods that doctors suggest for people with diabetes contain a lot of fiber. It can be found in different types of beans, peas, whole grains and fruits.

4) Try using sugar substitutes.

The regular table sugar (sucrose) is not a good sweetener for people with diabetes because it raises the blood glucose and calorie levels quite rapidly. However, there are some artificial alternatives, for example, Sucralose, Saccharin or Aspartame which are better for diabetics because they don’t affect the blood sugar level. There have been some rumors that they contribute to the development of cancer and other diseases but it is not proven.

5) Avoid bad fats.

Saturated fats and trans fats are the two types of fat that diabetics should avoid. They can be found in most of the fast foods and sweets, frozen foods, bacon, margarine and butter just to name a few. You don’t have to be as careful with unsaturated fats but still keep the total amount of fats that you consume to not more than 30% of your daily calorie intake.

People with diabetes can certainly still live normal lives they just have to pay a little more attention to what they eat and what they do than others. Also remember that diabetic diet is basically just a simple, healthy diet which could be suggested to almost anyone. It doesn’t matter if you are interested in preventing diabetes, controlling it or just improving your overall health, you can still definitely use these tips.
